The Kansas City Chiefs signed wide receiver Andrew Armstrong to the active roster from the practice squad on Friday, filling one of two open spots as Rashee Rice continues to deal with hamstring and knee injuries.
Rice will miss Sunday night’s game at the Seattle Seahawks, the second consecutive contest he has been ruled out. The Chiefs have not received any limited practice participation from him this week.
Armstrong’s elevation marks his second appearance on the 53-man roster this season after he was called up for last week’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Official team channels confirmed the transaction late Friday.
“Chiefs have filled one of their two open roster spots with WR Andrew Armstrong signed from the practice squad,” Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest wrote. “RB Nate Carter takes Armstrong’s slot on the practice squad. He was dropped for the addition of LB Aiden Fisher earlier this week, but now he’s back.”
Carter returns to the practice squad after a brief removal earlier in the week to accommodate linebacker Aiden Fisher. The move restores depth behind the running backs while Armstrong steps into the receiver group.
In his only regular-season action so far, Armstrong recorded one reception for 13 yards on two targets against the Chargers. That catch produced a first down in a 22-6 victory that improved the Chiefs to 5-0.
He started that contest and played 42 of the team’s offensive snaps, roughly two-thirds of the total, along with nine snaps on special teams. Coaches have noted his run-blocking reliability and route-running consistency as reasons for the increased role.
Armstrong went undrafted in 2025 after a productive college career. He signed initially with the Miami Dolphins, later spent a short stint on the Detroit Lions practice squad, and joined the Chiefs on a reserve/future deal in January.
At Arkansas in 2024, he led the Southeastern Conference with 78 catches for 1,140 yards. Those totals ranked second in school history for a single season and earned him first-team All-SEC recognition.
During the 2026 preseason, Armstrong caught seven passes for 85 yards across three games. The production included several first-down conversions and helped him nearly earn a spot on the initial 53-man roster at cutdowns.
Rice has totaled 13 receptions for 190 yards and one touchdown in three games this season before the injury. He entered Week 7 averaging 14.6 yards per catch but has not practiced since suffering the hamstring issue in Week 4.
The Chiefs enter the Seattle matchup with the NFL’s only undefeated record in the AFC. They have scored 140 points while allowing just 83 through five games, ranking among the league’s top defenses in points allowed.
Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton remains on injured reserve with an ankle injury, further thinning the group alongside Rice’s absence. Xavier Worthy and other younger options are expected to handle the bulk of the targets on Sunday night.
Armstrong’s addition gives Kansas City another perimeter option who has already shown the ability to handle a significant snap count. His presence should help maintain depth as the team looks to stay perfect on the road against a Seahawks squad that is 3-3.
