Back in March 2024, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was involved in a high-speed crash in Dallas. The former second-round pick from SMU said he'd take "full responsibility" for his role in this accident.
The preliminary reports said Rice was driving a Lamborghini that "traveled onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing a chain reaction collision involving four other vehicles."
Despite how alarming this situation was for Rice and the Chiefs, he didn't receive a suspension from the NFL during the 2024 season. The league wanted his criminal charges resolved before handing out any discipline.
With that said, a major update on Rice's case was announced this Thursday.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, a Dallas County judge has sentenced Rice to five years probation. He's also set to face 30 days of jail time.
"A Dallas County judge just sentenced Chiefs WR Rashee Rice to five years probation and 30 days of jail time that can be served during those five years stemming for his role in a multi-car crash in Dallas during the 2024 offseason," Schefter said. "Now that the judge has ruled, the NFL can expedite its disciplinary process and Rice is likely to receive a multi-game suspension.
"Rashee Rice also received deferred adjudication so if he completes his probation successfully, the case will be dismissed."
The NFL had this to say just moments ago: "We have been closely monitoring all developments in the matter which remains under review."
Rice had 938 receiving yards and seven touchdowns during his rookie season with the Chiefs. His second year in Kansas City was cut short due to a torn ACL.
Whenever Rice fully recovers from his torn ACL, he'll probably have to serve a suspension before making his official return to the gridiron.
