Detroit Lions Should Sign Kareem Hunt Before Week 1

The Detroit Lions still have their RB1 in place with Jahmyr Gibbs who they just signed to a massive three-year, $67.5 million contract. They also signed Isiah Pacheco this offseason.

While their running back room seems set on the surface, the depth quickly takes a hit. That is why Detroit must look to sign another running back ahead of the season, and based on a recent visit, that ideal running back is clearly Kareem Hunt.

Kareem Hunt Would Drastically Help the Detroit Lions

While they did sign Pacheco, he has also already been dealing with an MCL sprain. While he should be ready for Week 1, knee injuries can linger and Detroit can’t risk that carrying into the 2026 season.

Sione Vaki, Jabari Small and Raheem Blackshear have all also dealt with injuries. Signing Hunt would give Detroit the necessary depth at the running back position they need. While Hunt is not longer the explosive running back he used to be in his prime, he still produced serviceable numbers with 611 yards and eight touchdowns.

Between his ability to still produce in a limited role, as well as his familiarity already playing with Pacheco, adding Hunt right before the season is the ideal addition the Lions need to make.
