Kareem Hunt makes intriguing Lions move

The Detroit Lions are hungry to get to the Super Bowl during the 2026 season. Detroit has a sense of urgency around the entire organization after last season’s disappointing 9-8 finish. The Lions are doing their due diligence on one veteran player just weeks before the regular season.

The Lions hosted veteran running back Kareem Hunt for a visit on Tuesday, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Hunt did not immediately sign with Detroit after his visit. Still, this potential addition is something for Lions fans to keep their eyes on ahead of the regular season.

This visit comes one day after the Lions signed free agent running back Roydell Williams to a contract.

Detroit seems determined to add depth at running back ahead of the regular season. It is a stark change of strategy after Dan Campbell praised the team’s depth following Detroit’s preseason win against Washington.

If the Lions did signed Hunt, they would reunite him with former Chiefs teammate Isiah Pacheco. In fact, that would give Detroit both of Kansas City’s leading rushers from the 2025 season.

The Lions plan to feature superstar Jahmyr Gibbs in 2026 after giving him a monster contract extension. Pacheco should provide some power running on the side, with Jacob Saylors and Sione Vaki also in reserve alongside Williams.

As for Hunt, he appears to still have some juice after an underrated 2025 season. He logged 163 carries for 611 rushing yards and eight touchdowns last year. Hunt also added 18 receptions for 143 receiving yards and a touchdown through the air.

Ultimately, Hunt looks like a better depth player than any other options currently on the roster. It is easy to understand why Detroit wanted to kick the tires on Hunt.

It will be fascinating to see if Hunt decides to join Detroit ahead of a crucial 2026 season for the organization.
