The New Orleans Saints have another reunion.
According to a Tuesday morning report by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Saints are hiring Joel Thomas to be their running backs coach. This makes the third hire for new head coach Kellen Moore and the second former coach to return to New Orleans.
Thomas was with the Saints from 2015-2023 and spent last season with the New York Giants. New Orleans went with Derrick Foster last year, but he went to the Dallas Cowboys in the offseason. Thomas has obviously worked with Alvin Kamara in the past, so this is a potentially good pairing. He's a very smart coach who got an additional opportunity at the Senior Bowl as an offensive coordinator.
In addition to Thomas, Moore's staff hires now include Brendan Nugent (offensive line) and Chase Haslett (tight ends). He also made the decision to retain Keith Williams for the wide receivers, which was a smart move. We should hopefully learn more about the defensive hires soon enough, as that could prompt some major changes in how they operate.
The NFL Scouting Combine is right around the corner, and it would be nice for the Saints to have their coaches in place, but they're not in a hurry to fill out their staff.
