Second-year general manager Adam Peters took five wide receivers onto his initial 53-man roster. That did not mean the Washington Commanders were done seeking reinforcements to the supporting cast around NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year quarterback Jayden Daniels.
It's something the Commanders did last season with veteran Noah Brown after his release from the Houston Texans. A new report suggests Peters is attempting to do the same again.
Kendrick Bourne was immediately linked to the Commanders after he departed from the New England Patriots. The Minnesota Vikings were in discussions for a trade before they struck a deal with the Carolina Panthers for hometown hero Adam Thielen instead. After that, the AFC East club had no option other than to remove him from the equation.
Peters knows Bourne well. He was part of the San Francisco 49ers' brain trust that picked him up in undrafted free agency. The wideout repaid this faith, and he could potentially end up on the Commanders in the not-too-distant future.
According to Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network, Bourne is scheduled to meet with the Commanders on Tuesday. He's going to visit with his old employers in San Francisco on Monday. The respected insider also stated that a framework for a possible contract had been agreed upon with both organizations beforehand.
Bourne could welcome a return to the place where it all started at this stage of his playing career. However, the Commanders are an attractive destination with a superstar quarterback and lofty ambitions to reach the Super Bowl in 2025.
Having a previous connection to Peters only strengthens Washington's position. It could legitimately go either way, but there is now a legitimate path for Bourne to join the Commanders if everything goes according to plan during their meeting.
The former Eastern Washington standout might come to the Commanders. He might not. But the fact that Peters is in a position to try and get players like this is a testament to how far this storied franchise has come in such a short space of time under his leadership.
Adding Bourne to a receiver room that also includes Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel Sr., Jaylin Lane, Noah Brown, and Luke McCaffrey would only bolster Daniels' firepower further. And if Peters can get one over on the team he helped build into a contender, the better Washington's chances will be.
Time will tell, but the Commanders have a shot.
