Kenny Pickett makes case for fringe roster player

There is still some time until the NFL's dreaded cutdown day when teams must trim their rosters to 53 players. QB Kenny Pickett is already adding to the case for one of the Steelers' fringe roster players.

"Gunner [Olszewski] is reliable. He shows up every day. I have a ton of great things to say about Gunner," Pickett said. The second-year quarterback said a lot of guys are doing well but only mentioned Olszewski's name.

Pickett's statement came when asked about the battle for the No. 4 wide receiver, which may be surprising to some as Diontae Johnson, George Pickens, Allen Robinson II and Calvin Austin III seem to be at the top of the depth chart.

Olszewski, who signed a two-year, $4.2 million deal with Pittsburgh last offseason, was benched last season as the team's kick and punt returner after a couple of muffed balls. The 26-year-old only had 53 receiving yards and 39 rushing yards as well.

He is certainly hoping to turn things back around in 2023 and looks ready to take advantage of every opportunity he gets as he has shown flashes in training camp.

Among those who Olszewski will be battling for a spot with on the Steelers' 53-man roster are Miles Boykin, Hakeem Butler, Cody White and Jordan Byrd.

Olszewski will get his first opportunity to plead his case on Friday night when the Steelers take on the Buccaneers in their first preseason action.
