The Minnesota Vikings announced on Monday that quarterback J.J. McCarthy would likely miss Sunday's Week 3 game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Shortly thereafter, news came out that he would likely miss 2-4 weeks with an ankle injury.
There were some conspiracy theories that the Vikings were quietly benching him with the excuse of an injury, but head coach Kevin O'Connell quickly debunked that during Monday's press conference.
"No, not at all," said O'Connell when learning about McCarthy's injury. "In fact, it was pretty crushing this morning to hear that for me. Look, for J.J., he's in a long process, a long journey right now where there's going to be some ups and downs, and as a team, I think our ability to play a little bit more consistent around him on the offensive side, these one off, kind of critical errors that end up being totally out of J.J.'s control. But no, there's not any aspect of this – this is a purely medical-based thing that we're dealing with right now."
Sounds like this may have been the play McCarthy hurt his ankle. Late in the 3rd, he scrambled on 2nd/20.

Now that we are a few days removed from the injury happening, there is more of a semblance on how the injury is responding. O'Connell was relatively positive about his recovery.
"Yeah, he's responding well early on to treatment and things," said O'Connell. "He's in a boot and letting that thing settle down when he's not getting treatment. [He's] still heavily involved in meetings and installs and everything, has had great energy and enthusiasm to kind of attack it in any way he can for now, and that'll be able to build and progress from there. But, yeah, he's still in the early stages of it."
It's good news for the Vikings that McCarthy is responding well to treatment. Will he end up missing the majority of the timeline or come back sooner? The best case scenario might be to wait until after the bye week to let his ankle heal.
Ankle injuries can fluctuate in sevarity, which could be in the Vikings' favor. We will keep you updated on how things develop with McCarthy over his recovery.
