Key Points

  • Kirk Herbstreit and Pat McAfee appear together on "College GameDay."
  • Herbstreit recently reacted to news that McAfee’s personal show, "The Pat McAfee Show," surpassed 1 billion views in September.
  • McAfee founded the show in 2019, and it made its way onto ESPN’s network in 2023.

One of the best sports shows on television is ESPN’s "College GameDay," which airs every Saturday during the college football season.

Two major reasons for its ongoing success are Kirk Herbstreit — the show’s longest-tenured panelist — and Pat McAfee, who joined the program full-time in September 2022 and has arguably become the face of it.

The chemistry among the entire crew — from Rece Davis and Desmond Howard to McAfee, Herbstreit, and the newest addition, legendary coach Nick Saban — makes for an exciting, knowledgeable, and entertaining broadcast leading up to kickoff each week.

However, "College GameDay" isn’t the only show seeing massive success with McAfee’s name on it.

ESPN announced that in September, "The Pat McAfee Show" — which McAfee founded in 2019 — had a record-breaking month, surpassing 1 billion monthly social media views for the first time and delivering its most-watched September ever across both ESPN and YouTube.

It didn’t take long for Herbstreit, who frequently appears on McAfee’s show, to react to the news with a message to McAfee and his crew, writing, “Congrats to you and the boys!!!”

The show’s success doesn’t rest solely on Pat McAfee. Former NFL star AJ Hawk serves as co-host, alongside well-known personalities such as Boston Connor, Ty Schmit, Darius Butler, and Tone Digz. The program also regularly features athletes, former coaches, analysts, and other special guests throughout the season.

“We are very thankful that we get to do this for a living,” McAfee said in response to the announcement. “Learning how many people are watching our show every day is wild for all of us. We started in a basement. Our main goal is to celebrate sports and its athletes. It’s cool to know that sports fans seem to enjoy what we’re doing.”

The show continues to air weekly on ESPN from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. EST, before rolling over onto digital streaming for the following hours. It originally started strictly on YouTube, where it truly made its mark and paved the way for ESPN to bring it on full-time—a success that ultimately led to McAfee joining "College GameDay."
