Kyle Shanahan made secret offseason deal with 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers quietly moved to secure coach Kyle Shanahan’s future during the offseason.

Shanahan quietly signed a new contract during the offseason, according to Tom Pelissero of The Ringer. Terms of the deal were not available, but it is an extension on Shanahan’s current deal, which was set to run through 2027.

Shanahan’s long-term fit in San Francisco was never really in doubt, but the two sides clearly made it a priority to ensure there would be no uncertainty with regard to his future. Thursday’s win over the Los Angeles Rams marked the start of his tenth season as the team’s head coach, and brought his record overall to 83-67. While Shanahan has yet to win the Niners a Super Bowl, he has taken them to the playoffs five times and reached the NFC Championship or beyond in four of those trips.

The 49ers are standing by Shanahan despite a severe offseason car crash that caused serious injuries. The exact cause of that crash has been the source of some speculation.

Shanahan’s previous contract had been paying him roughly $14 million a year, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL.
