Although it's not really a huge surprise, the Kyler Murray era for the Arizona Cardinals is reportedly over.
The Cardinals informed Murray that he'll be released on the first day of the new league year, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. There were rumblings that he could be traded this offseason, but the front office in Arizona didn't have much time to orchestrate a deal. That's because Murray is due another $19.5 million in guarantees by March 15.
After this news dropped on Tuesday afternoon, Murray said farewell to the Cardinals by releasing a heartfelt message on social media.
"To everyone that supported me and showed kindness to my family and I during my time in AZ, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. I wanted nothing more than to be the one to end the 77 year drought for this organization, I am sorry I failed us," Murray wrote. "I wish this community and my brothers nothing but the best. I am no stranger to adversity, I am prepared for whatever’s next. I trust in God and my work ethic. I truly believe my best ball is in front of me and I look forward to proving it. Godspeed."
Murray, the No. 1 overall pick from the 2019 NFL Draft, will finish his time in Arizona with 20,460 passing yards, 3,193 rushing yards and 153 total touchdowns.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Cardinals are expected to have interest in veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. That makes sense considering he worked with the team's new head coach, Mike LaFleur, during their time together on the Los Angeles Rams.
Johnny Venerable of PHNX Sports , meanwhile, mentioned Tyson Bagent, Geno Smith and Malik Willis as potential options for the Cardinals.
The NFL's legal negotiating window is set to begin on March 9 at noon ET.
