The Los Angeles Rams announced that Ethan Evans, Rob Havenstein, Quentin Lake, Nate Landman, Matthew Stafford, Kobie Turner and Kyren Williams were voted team captains for the 2025 season.
Williams is among three first-time team captains, joining Evans and Landman. The 25-year-old is coming off a career year that saw him rush for 1,299 yards and 14 touchdowns.
He was rewarded with a contract extension during the offseason that will begin in 2026 and run through the 2028 season. He will reportedly receive $33 million ($23 million guaranteed) over the next three years.
Williams said being named a captain means more to him than the contract extension, via Wyatt Miller of TheRams.com:
“(Being named a captain) made more of an impact on my heart than probably the contract because to me that is the direct representation of who I am as a person every single day in the eyes of my teammates,” Williams said.
Williams wants to continue making an impact on the field while showing everyone that he deserves to be one of the Rams’ captains:
“I just want to be able to continue to play football at a very high clip, continue to keep showing the world who I am and what I can do, and take care of my family,” Williams said. “And give the most praise to the Lord that I can and follow his mission every single day. That’s probably my biggest three concerns right now in life. And that’s the only thing I see going forward.”
Williams hoped to be named a Rams captain last year and was disappointed when that didn’t come to fruition. Instead of dwelling on that, he continued working hard to ensure he would get the opportunity this season.
It is a well-deserved honor for Williams, who has emerged as one of the most important players on the Rams as they look to return to the Super Bowl.
Kyren Williams is expected to be the Rams’ lead running back this year, but they also have excellent depth behind him in second-year player Blake Corum and fourth-round draft pick Jarquez Hunter.
Williams understands that his workload might be reduced and wants to make the most of his opportunities.
Williams is one of the Rams’ most valuable players on offense, so it makes sense that they would want to try to cut back on his carries in order to maximize his effectiveness.
He will still get his fair share of opportunities in the running and passing game, while Corum and potentially Hunter can spell him at times when he needs a breather.
