Lane Kiffin reveals how Ole Miss found Trinidad Chambliss and compares his transfer situation to Jaxson Dart

On this week's SEC coaches teleconference, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin was asked about discovering Trinidad Chambliss from the Division II ranks. He gave his support staff and coaches credit for combing through hours and hours of film and finding him. But, he then recalled another non-FBS signal caller and a potential bombshell transfer portal.

"There actually was a moment, it was like with Cam Ward. I watched Cam before everybody knew about him, who he was, and I said, ‘Wow, we got to get this guy. This guy’s really electric,’" Kiffin said. "Brought him on an official visit. Actually, he was committing here, then Washington State had hired his coach and up the money and he went to Washington State last minute. Him and Jaxson (Dart) were both going to come here, actually, together. Think about that."

So prior to Dart arriving, leading Ole Miss to multiple double-digit seasons and breaking damn near every passing record in program history, the staff almost landed both him and 2025 No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward.

Like Trinidad Chambliss, Cam Ward put up video game numbers at Incarnate Word.

Ward was third in all of FCS with 4,648 passing yards for Incarnate Word in 2021. He completed 65 percent of his attempts, and led the country with 47 touchdown passes. At Ferris State, Chambliss won a national title while tallying more than 3,000 yards of total offense and 51 touchdowns. He threw for 2,901 yards and 26 touchdowns while also running for 1,019 and 25 touchdowns.

Ole Miss fans, sit back and take a moment to think about a Kiffin offense with both Jaxson Dart and Cam Ward in it.

Take all the time you need.

Lane Kiffin talked about the uniqueness of Trinidad Chambliss paired with Austin Simmons.

"So in this situation it was similar to that of, ‘Wow, this guy’s really unique, special quickness, ability to release the ball',” Kiffin said. "I just thought it was really important to add him, even though I felt great about Austin.

"I tell our staff, look at those examples all the time. There’s one in our conference that lost their quarterback last week and look at the difference in the game. The year before with Florida. How differently they were until they got (DJ) Lagway back," Kiffin said. "It’s like playing a whole different team. I’ve said to Oklahoma, Texas, you know, the 50-0 game. Texas beat Oklahoma because Oklahoma doesn’t have a quarterback. I’m just really happy he’s here.”

A great example of this was when Simmons went down with an ankle injury in the game versus Kentucky. Chambliss came in, ran the football three times for 13 yards and iced the game away. Last week, he gets his first Power 4 start and outduels Taylen Green en route to a 41-35 win. These kinds of moves in the transfer portal are why Kiffin is the Portal King.

Rewinding a few years, how would Cam Ward have affected Jaxson Dart's legacy?

And maybe look at it two-fold: how would Cam Ward's transfer to Ole Miss have affected his legacy and eventual No. 1 overall pick status? There's no question Kiffin would've been a kid in a candy store with these two on the same roster. Maybe you allow Dart to lean more into the quarterback run game while you let Ward come in and sling it around? Maybe it would have been a true two-quarterback system where you forced defensive coordinators to prepare for both?

Either way, it's a wild thing to think about whether you're an Ole Miss fan or not. Dart won a lot of games and is arguably one of the best to ever do it under center in Oxford. Ward dominated at Washington State and then put up Heisman worthy numbers at Miami before being taken first overall by the Tennessee Titans.

The what-if games are endless. What could've been, huh?
