The Las Vegas Raiders are absolutely set up to have a very good cornerback room in a few years. Right now, they are super young and really don't have the experience that you'd like for your young players to have.
The one who is supposed to be the guy in 2025, Jakorian Bennett, has missed playing time his first two years due to injury and just not being able to get on the field as much as he would like. But he has shown some really, really good flashes that he can be a great cornerback in this league.
Then there is Decamerion Richardson, who played a pretty good amount as a rookie but had to learn from his mistakes as he went. He played due to other injuries but is still a second-year player. And of course, Darien Porter, the rookie who may have the most potential, is, well, a rookie. But also, he didn't start playing cornerback until this last year in college. Before that, he was a receiver, so he really doesn't have the experience you'd like him to have.
Regardless, this unit feels like it could be really good. Then, when you factor in that their potentially best player was playing in insane conditions last year, it only gives you more hope.
"Yeah, it feels amazing, man," Bennett told reporters this week during a mandatory minicamp. "I haven't had both my shoulders since college. So like, man, I go out there during games knowing that my shoulders will pop out, like, last season, my shoulder probably popped out like, five times because I had a torn labrum.
"A lot of people don't know that, but I was just thugging it out, they'll put it back in, go back in, or whatever, but it feels good to have it back right now. Now it's time to keep taking that next step."
Bennett had the most pass breakups in the league at the last moment he played, of course, it didn't end that way because he only played in 10 games, starting in seven. But he was easily the best player in the cornerback room last season.
And the fact that he did all of that with the injury he had, and one as severe as that, just shows that when he is healthy, he could be a legit star. And, I'm sure the Raiders see that, too.
When you play against the quarterback the Raiders will have to play against, teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, and even Denver Broncos, you will have to have some good cornerbacks, because those quarterbacks can torch your secondary if not.
