Las Vegas Raiders QB/WR Draft Pick Drawing Shocking Comparison

After a draft that saw them linked to numerous quarterback prospects, the Las Vegas Raiders selected Montana State’s Tommy Mellott with pick 213. Mellott, a speedy signal-caller, demonstrated significant production in college, completing 353 of 551 attempts for 4,745 yards and 39 touchdowns, with only six interceptions. His athletic profile has drawn comparisons to Julian Edelman, particularly regarding his transition from college quarterback.

However, similar to Edelman, Mellott’s future in the NFL likely lies at wide receiver. This position change is further solidified by the Raiders’ selection of Cam Miller from North Dakota State shortly after drafting Mellott.

Did Tom Brady Identify The Next Julian Edelman For The Las Vegas Raiders?

The decision to transition Mellott to wide receiver appears logical, given his exceptional athleticism. He reportedly ran a 4.39 40-yard dash at his pro day and displayed impressive scrambling ability at Montana State, rushing for 2,847 yards on 419 attempts, including 38 touchdowns. Mellott’s athleticism is a defining trait, and if he can develop his receiving skills to match his throwing ability, he could become a valuable player.

The Raiders’ decision also carries a degree of serendipity. As widely noted, Tom Brady, who holds a minority stake in the team, brings firsthand knowledge of Edelman’s successful transition from college quarterback to NFL receiver during their time together in New England. While each player is unique, the opportunity to potentially replicate that success with a late-round pick from a smaller school is an intriguing prospect.

While Mellott may possess emergency quarterback capabilities, his immediate future is at wide receiver. This position change, combined with his athletic profile, gives him a compelling story, distinguishing him from many other seventh-round selections in this year’s draft.
