If you're coming here to find out if the Las Vegas Raiders have hired their new head coach, well, they haven't. Sorry to disappoint you, as it does appear that the search has now taken an unexpected turn heading in no direction. Since Ben Johnson chose the Chicago Bears over the Raiders, there really hasn't been any more info to come out regarding who the Raiders are going to hire.
But, there has been some info to come out about a guy they almost hired, or at least a guy that was on their radar.
The Raiders had a connection with Mike Vrabel, the former Tennessee Titans head coach, Cleveland Browns linebacker coach, and now New England Patriots head coach. Tom Brady, who is now a minority owner for the Raiders and calling some of the shots, has a relationship with Vrabel, his former teammate.
So, the pairing really made all of the sense in the world. Then, Vrabel almost immediately signed as the head coach with the Patriots, for what feels like a match made in heaven. The two sides are perfect for each other, and that's really the same way we felt about the Raiders and Vrabel -- a more advanced version of Antonio Pierce who has actually proven he's a good coach, with playoff appearances.
But, it appears the Raiders dodged a bullet
On Tuesday, Vrabel hired Josh McDaniels to be his offensive coordinator. Yes, the same Josh McDaniels who was the head coach of the Raiders with some of the worst offenses we have ever seen. The same guy that got fired from the Raiders.
Now, that doesn't mean he would have brought in McDaniels as the OC in Las Vegas if he was hired there, because, well, that would be a weird situation. But, that's not out of the realm of possibilities.
The Raiders may be seeing that hire and may be glad that's not what ended up happening.
