Latest Andrew Thomas injury update sparks major concerns for Giants ahead of Week 1 showdown vs. Washington Commanders
Lucas Boland-USA TODAY Sports

The chances of New York Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas playing this Sunday seem very low at the current moment.

Per ESPN's Jordan Raanan, Thomas did practice today and participated in team period. Ultimately, that is an incredibly positive sign for Thomas' recovery. However, shortly after practice, it was announced that Thomas is listed as doubtful on the official injury report

Additionally, Thomas was highly noncommittal about whether he would play against the Washington Commanders. He bluntly told reporters, "We'll see."

Will Andrew Thomas play vs the Commanders?

After practice, Thomas spoke to the media and shared insight into how he and the medical team with the Giants have approached his recovery. He emphasized an approach centered on not rushing through the process.

"Yeah, I would say, my biggest concern is the risk of re-injury," Thomas told reporters, "So that's something that I've been talking to the trainers and doctors about, just to make sure when I'm out there, I'm ready to go, and that's why we've been increasing the volume but slowly, just to make sure I respond well to it."

That strategic workload approach was part of the reason why Thomas practiced on Wednesday and sat out on Thursday. Although it's a positive sign to see Thomas on the field for practice, it sounds as if they want to continue to take it slow to avoid future issues. It seems unlikely that with this slow ramp-up, they'd suddenly be willing to thrust him into a complete game.

Thomas also mentioned trying to figure out what kind of pain he can endure while playing.

"That's just working on the pain management. Figuring out what you can push through, what you can't. That's what we've been discussing aside from injury."

The Giants desperately need Thomas on the field for most of the 2025 season. It would be beneficial for their star left tackle to play against the Commanders to help set the tone of the season. However, if he's a shell of himself due to not being fully recovered, and if playing only disrupts his recovery, it doesn't benefit the Giants to play him.

The answer to whether Thomas will play in Week 1 won't be found out until the game kicks off this Sunday. Hopefully, if he misses the game, it won't be long before he's back as the Giants' starting left tackle.
