Legendary Kansas City Chiefs player signs one-day contract with the team as he officially retires after 17 NFL seasons
Douglas Defelice-USA TODAY Sports

Former Kansas City Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt is signing a one-day contract with the team as he officially retires from the NFL after 17 seasons.

The Chiefs also honored Colquitt with a highlight package on X.

Colquitt spent the first 15 seasons of his career in Kansas City after being selected in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He played for five different head coaches (Dick Vermeil, Herm Edwards, Todd Haley, Romeo Crennel, Andy Reid) and four general managers (Carl Peterson, Scott Pioli, John Dorsey, Brett Veach) during his tenure with the Chiefs.

When Colquitt signed a five-year, $18.75 million contract extension following the 2012 season, he became the highest-paid punter of all-time. In 2017 he passed former Chiefs punting great Jerrel Wilson in both punts and punting yards. He also tied Wilson as the longest tenured player in franchise history.

Colquitt was one of the best punters in the NFL throughout the entirety of his career with Kansas City, but he only made the Pro Bowl twice (2012, 2016) and egregiously was never named an All-Pro. However, he was able to cap off his time with the Chiefs with a Super Bowl win in 2019.

There's no doubt that Colquitt will end up in the Chiefs Hall of Honor one day. After the 2019 season, he spent time with Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Cleveland Browns, playing in 28 games between those four teams. Colquitt's last took the field in the 2021 regular season finale as a Brown.

Colquitt could have a shot to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame some day, but considering only one punter has ever made it (Ray Guy), his odds are pretty low. Regardless, Colquitt will be remembered as one of the best in NFL history, and a legend in Chiefs franchise history.
