Liam Coen Speaks on Travis Hunter’s Usage

Jacksonville Jaguars second-overall pick Travis Hunter is perhaps the NFL’s most unique player, and his offseason usage will be one of the biggest storylines of the offseason. Hunter played wide receiver and cornerback at a high level in college, and Jacksonville traded up to see if he can play that role at a professional level. Unfortunately, injuries limited him to just seven up-and-down games as the Colorado product struggled to adapt to the most unique role in the NFL.

While there’s a long way between now and the start of the regular season, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen recently addressed Travis Hunter and his projected usage for the upcoming season.

“We’re gonna continue to evaluate,” Coen said. “What does his schedule look like? Where do we need him more on this day or as a team. We’ll continue to be fluid with that.”

Liam Coen: Jaguars to Be “Fluid” With Travis Hunter’s Usage

Reading between the lines, it sounds like the Jaguars plan on using Travis Hunter as a cornerback. Coen made it clear that Hunter’s usage will depend on the strengths and weaknesses of the team, and the Jaguars are in good shape at wide receiver.

Jakobi Meyers was a godsend for this organization, recording 42 receptions for 483 yards and three touchdowns during his nine games with the team. Parker Washington broke out and finished with 58 receptions for 847 yards and five touchdowns. These two alone form a solid duo, and former first-round pick Brian Thomas is the ultimate wild card. While he had a rough 2025, he’s only one year removed from a 1,200-yard rookie season.

Quite frankly, it’s hard to see where Travis Hunter would fit on the offense. While he could make a few offensive cameos on scripted plays, he probably won’t be a full-time player. He has all the talent in the world, but it’s clear he still needs time to adjust to the NFL game. For his sake and the sake of the Jaguars, it’s probably best if he spends the offseason focusing on just one position.
