Lions Add New Receiver After Season-Ending News

The Detroit Lions signed veteran wide receiver and return specialist DeAndre Carter to their practice squad after Tom Kennedy suffered a season-ending knee injury.

The move gives Detroit another experienced option in the return game as head coach Dan Campbell’s team prepares for a divisional matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

Kennedy’s absence creates an opening for the Lions to address their special teams depth. Carter brings NFL experience as both a receiver and returner, potentially giving Detroit flexibility while the coaching staff evaluates its options.

Carter previously played for the Chicago Bears, where he made an impact returning kickoffs. In 2024, he averaged 31.9 yards per kickoff return, ranking second in the NFL. That production offers an encouraging sign of what he could bring if Detroit elevates him to its active roster.

The practice squad signing does not automatically mean Carter will play Sunday. He must learn the team’s system, and Detroit must decide whether to activate him for the game.

The timing matters with the Lions preparing to face Green Bay. Reliable returns can help establish field position and give the offense shorter drives to manage, particularly in a competitive divisional matchup.

Carter’s experience could also help Detroit avoid placing additional special teams responsibilities on key offensive players. His ability to handle returns would give the coaching staff another option while it adjusts to Kennedy’s absence.

The Lions enter the matchup at 3-2 and will need sound execution against a Green Bay team that has started the season strongly. Special teams could become an important factor if the game remains close.

Carter now has an opportunity to earn a larger role in Detroit. Whether he makes his debut this weekend will depend on the team’s roster decision and how quickly he gets up to speed.
