The Detroit Lions game against the Philadelphia Eagles will come too soon for tight end Sam LaPorta.
The 24-year-old has been ruled out of Sunday’s contest with injury, having been absent from practice all week. LaPorta did not appear to suffer any setbacks in the win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday, but has since struggled with a back issue and will miss the highly anticipated NFC "Sunday Night Football" showdown.
Per the Lions’ injury report, safety Kerby Johnson (knee), cornerback Terrion Arnold (concussion) and defensive lineman Josh Paschal (back) are also out against Philadelphia, which has key injury worries of its own heading into the game.
LaPorta, a second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowler in 2023, is second on the team in receiving yards with 489. He has recorded 40 receptions and three touchdowns so far this season.
Brock Wright is expected to start in LaPorta's place, with head coach Dan Campbell claiming the former Notre Dame TE's confidence is “sky high."
"Brock's a guy we don't talk a lot about, but he's the jack of all trades. He does everything for us: pass protect, run block, he can run some routes, he plays special teams," Campbell said via the team’s official website on Friday. "He's one of the most dependable players we have on this team."

Wright has made nine catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns in 2025 and has been used in multiple roles on offense and special teams.
"At the end of the day, what you really need in the tight end position is versatility and smarts and he's got both of those — and he's tough," Campbell added. "So, he checks a lot of boxes of a well-rounded tight end and so that is always going to make me feel a lot better. Offensively, feel a lot better."
Arnold, meanwhile, won’t clear NFL concussion protocols in time for Sunday, having missed all three practices this week. There was hope that his status might change ahead of Sunday’s game, but that hasn’t been the case.
Of note, Joseph has missed three games with a knee injury; his recovery has taken longer than expected. Paschal has practiced since he sustained a back injury and could be another week away from a return.
Philadelphia (7-2) hosts Detroit (6-3) at 8:20 p.m. ET Sunday on NBC and Peacock.
