Lions beat reporter shines light on key stat that could save offense in 2025

The Detroit Lions' wide receiving corp is one of the best in the NFL. Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams highlight the group, with both touching 1,000 receiving yards in 2024.

Tim Twentyman, the Lions' team reporter, shined a light on one of the best parts of this duo and the entire WR room for the Lions, which is their ability to limit the number of passes their dropping from quarterback Jared Goff.

Goff, who had the second-most passing yards in the league last season, managed to hit his targets with enough accuracy that helped them to drop the ball the least of any team in the NFL.

"t's really an underrated component of this passing attack. Jared Goff is an extremely accurate quarterback. His 72.4 completion percentage was No. 2 in the league last year. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta, Tim Patrick and Kalif Raymond have outstanding hands, and Jameson Williams has really improved that aspect of his game over the last couple seasons. A low drop percentage also directly correlated to Detroit leading the NFL in yards after the catch last year (2,508)," wrote Twentyman on the statistic.

As Twentyman mentions, this accuracy and lack of dropped passes isn't just limited to their tandem in St. Brown and Williams. All pass catchers, including top tight end target LaPorta, are benefitting from Goff's accuracy. This is a huge way for Detroit to manage to get over two big obstacles in its way to begin the season: the loss of Ben Johnson at OC and the sudden retirement of center Frank Ragnow.

Goff's accuracy a critical part of Detroit's offense

With Goff being so comfortable letting the football fly into tight windows, and with him comfortable doing it often, it's hard to see how this offense regresses barring major injury or an actually decimated-looking offensive line in Ragnow's absence.

Ragnow, it should be noted, was one of the best run blockers in the league. That benefitted Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery the most, as they became one of the best running back duos in the league as a result.

However, the way this impacts Goff is that the Lions lost their anchor on the line. Ragnow won't be able to help control the line anymore, and that's an issue for Goff's timing and ability to get a good enough read downfield for his typically huge plays.

Goff and the rest of Detroit's receivers have to just stay the course and keep leaning into their strength - having great hands and a quarterback with excellent accuracy.
