Lions' biggest bust for 2025 has already become painfully obvious

Detroit Lions training camp is nearly here, and expectations couldn’t be higher. For a roster this complete—and a team firmly in its championship window—every roster spot matters. The Lions don’t have much room for misfires, which is why one offseason signing is already drawing some uncomfortable attention.

That player is wide receiver Tim Patrick, whose comeback story is starting to feel more like a cautionary tale. Detroit took a calculated swing on Patrick last year, hoping the veteran could bounce back after missing the previous two seasons. He hadn’t played a snap since 2021, but after being released by the Denver Broncos following a contract restructure, the Lions were willing to give him a shot.

It resulted in a 33-reception, 394-yard, and three-touchdown season. Not exactly the results the team was looking for. However, they opted to re-sign the 31-year-old this offseason to a one-year, $2.5 million deal.

We've seen this before—it doesn't work. Patrick's time in the NFL is likely done... at least being a reliable weapon. Last season should have been all the proof Detroit needed. He's just not the guy he used to be four years and two season-ending injuries ago. Shocker. His return will fail to move the needle, making his offseason signing the Lions' biggest bust for 2025.

Tim Patrick’s comeback story with the Lions is already falling apart

Patrick's production (or lack thereof) is one thing—not a good thing... but something. The bigger talking point is his replacement already being on the roster, having to sacrifice training camp reps for a failed experiment that should have ended last season.

Isaac TeSlaa offers very similar on-field production as Patrick does, but he's nine years younger. The third-round pick stands at 6-foot-4, 214 pounds, and has already been having a strong offseason. He's an athletic, contested-catch-winning receiver who could be a red zone threat on Day 1, immediately putting pressure on Patrick.

The veteran is currently slotted as Detroit's WR3, but it doesn't take a whole lot of analysis to see the writing on the wall. He's not part of the future, and he might likely not be part of the now. With limited reps to go around, why wouldn't the team prioritize their young up-and-comer over the eight-year vet who has 2,403 receiving yards and 15 career touchdowns? Almost makes no sense.

This isn’t a knock on Patrick as a locker room presence or person, but it’s hard to justify his role on the field at this point.

Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams (for now) are the future. TeSlaa could be the big vertical threat alongside them for the foreseeable future. Timmy P is directly in the way—no matter how you slice it.

In a crowded WR room fighting for relevance behind St. Brown and Williams, Tim Patrick’s Lions stint is already looking like a swing and a miss. For a front office that’s been hitting on almost everything lately, this one’s starting to stand out—and not in a good way.
