The storylines between the Detroit Lions and Ben Johnson aren't going to die down anytime soon, especially if the Chicago Bears' trajectory continues to climb. What does this have to do with the trade deadline coming up on November 5, you might ask?
I'll get right to the point. Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame recently highlighted a trade he thinks should happen between those same Bears and the Miami Dolphins.
In this column, Verderame believes the Bears should make a move to acquire Dolphins star running back De'Von Achane.
"This is another instance of the Dolphins trading away a key contributor while getting meaningful draft capital for the future. Miami has Achane on his rookie deal for this and one more year at base salary numbers of $1.2 million and $1.4 million," he wrote.
Great. This is just what Lions fans wouldn't want to see. Their former offensive coordinator goes to a division rival and then gets yet another top-tier playmaker? Yikes.
"Acquiring Achane will be somewhat costly, considering the talent and the team’s control. But for Chicago, it could be worth it considering D’Andre Swift is averaging 3.3 yards per carry and could be released after this year, with Chicago saving $7.5 million," he went on. "Through his first two seasons, Achane rushed for 1,707 yards and 16 touchdowns on 5.6 yards per carry."
For fans who follow the NFL as a whole, they know Achane is a noteworthy name. His explosiveness is right up there with the likes of the Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs.
Currently, Lions fans can laugh at the Bears for how poor their rushing attack has been. Even more so, it's funnier considering they once let David Montgomery walk. But, if Chicago landed a player like Achane, everything changes.
The Bears improved their offensive line. They have weapons galore at wide receiver and tight end. Caleb Williams has shown plenty of growth. These are things which are hard to admit for this fan base. Yet, they're all true.
The only thing missing in Chicago is a competent run game. And, with Swift, Kyle Monangai and the rarely-used Roschon Johnson, the Bears really don't have a solution.
The Lions shouldn't be too worried about losing a grasp on this division, but if the Bears made a move like this, it would certainly make the North even tougher on Dan Campbell and company.
