Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford requested a trade from the franchise at the end of the 2020 season. Apparently, the Lions could complete a deal within the coming days.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently spoke with Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, telling him that Detroit has several offers for Stafford:
"It's pretty hot and heavy right now. We've got quite a few offers, and so it looks like we've got some trade partners. We're just trying to work out the best scenario and see what's best for us, ultimately.
"I mean, we're mindful of trying to give him what he wants as well, but he also knows that, listen, we're going to find the best value for the Detroit Lions and what's best for us. That's kind of what we're doing."
Birkett says that the Washington Football Team, Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers are "believed to be" among teams interested in Stafford. He also says the Lions will likely get a first-round pick in exchange for the veteran.
During the 2020 campaign, Stafford threw for 4,084 yards and 26 touchdowns and averaged the second-highest yards per attempt of his career (7.7) while recording his fifth-highest passer rating (96.3).
It's unclear what the future holds for the rebuilding Lions, but Campbell did outline what he's looking for in the franchise's next quarterback. He wants the QB to be a leader and someone who players "gravitate to." He also said he wants a mobile quarterback with a strong arm and someone who makes accurate passes and smart decisions.
The Lions currently hold the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. It's unclear if they'll select a quarterback, but if they do, several could be available, including Mac Jones, Trey Lance, Kyle Trask and Zach Wilson.
