Lions Host CB Trevon Diggs For Tryout

Diggs, 27, is coming off a rough three-season stretch that was significantly impacted by injuries. He signed a five-year, $97MM extension after making back-to-back Pro Bowls in 2021 and 2022, but tore his left ACL just two games into the 2023 season. He recovered in time to start in Week 1 the following year, but went down in Week 12 with a groin injury and also underwent another surgery on his left knee. Last year, he appeared in the Cowboys’ first six games of the season before landing on injured reserve with a concussion. He returned in Week 16 but was waived due to poor play, which included a near-perfect passer rating when targeted.

The Packers claimed Diggs off waivers and started him in their Week 18 loss to the Vikings so they could rest their starters before the playoffs. The six-year veteran was active for Green Bay’s wild card matchup with the Bears, but played just one snap and was waived after the loss.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst indicated that the team might consider re-signing Diggs in the offseason, but he now seems more likely to join a different team in the NFC North. The Lions have been dealing with several injuries to start training camp, including a minor groin issue for cornerback D.J. Reed, per Detroit Football Network’s Justin Rogers. Head coach Dan Campbell downplayed Reed’s injury, saying that the team was not worried, but Diggs’ workout could be a sign that Detroit wants to add some depth at the position.

The team was already thin at outside cornerback following the departure of Terrion Arnold earlier this year amid his legal issues. Now, Reed’s injury leaves them with just one corner (Rock Ya-Sin) who played at least 50 snaps on the boundary last year, according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required). If signed, Diggs could have an opportunity not just to make the 53-man roster, but push for playing time as the No. 3 outside cornerback.

However, no deal between Lions and Diggs has been reached as of Monday. Given his injury history, Detroit may have wanted to check on his medicals to understand if he is even an option to add to their secondary.
