Jared Goff's 2025 campaign looked solid on paper, finishing with 4,564 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and eight interceptions on a 68% completion rate. He ranked second in the NFL in both touchdown passes and total passing yards, trailing only Matthew Stafford.
Despite the franchise quarterback’s impressive performance, the Detroit Lions finished 9–8 and missed the playoffs, finishing last in the NFC North. While the 31-year-old constantly put on strong numbers, the infrastructure around him struggled.
Plus, when under pressure, Goff's own completion rate plummeted more than 20%, which cost the Lions big time. So, Detroit is using the offseason to retool around him, starting with his contract.
Head coach Dan Campbell entered the new league year $12.2 million over the salary cap, with Goff's deal as the biggest number on the books. To fix this, the team restructured his deal, dropping his 2026 cap hit from $69.6 million to $37.6 million and freeing up $32 million for the offseason.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Lions converted $40 million of Goff’s base salary into a signing bonus. By adding a void year to the contract, they spread that $40 million cost over five years at $8 million per year.
This adjustment pushes his cap hits to $62.6 million in 2027 and $69.6 million in 2028, with a $16 million dead cap charge looming in 2029 if the void year triggers.

General manager Brad Holmes did not fully restructure the deal. The Lions could have converted another $13 million of Goff’s salary into a bonus to create more cap space but chose not to, leaving more flexibility for the future.
With the cap room cleared, the Lions signed center Cade Mays to a three-year, $25 million deal and added Larry Borom. The team also signed running back Isiah Pacheco to a one-year, $1.8 million fully guaranteed contract after trading David Montgomery to the Houston Texans for offensive lineman Juice Scruggs and two draft picks. Veteran Teddy Bridgewater was also re-signed to remain Jared Goff’s backup.
However, they are still hunting for a defensive boost. While a blockbuster trade between the Raiders and Ravens for Maxx Crosby collapsed today due to a failed physical, the five-time Pro Bowler’s availability remains a major storyline for Detroit.
