The Detroit Lions desperately needed to exit their Week 7 primetime clash against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a win. If they didn't, it'd have been their first time experiencing back to back losses since 2022, and it would've landed them firmly in third place within the NFC North at 4-3.
Luckily, we don't have to wonder about that. The Lions are 5-2 headed into the bye week, holding the most wins in the NFC North and looking good before a much-needed week of rest. After that, they're facing off with the Minnesota Vikings at Ford Field, the Washington Commanders on the road, and the Philadelphia Eagles also away from home.
Three huge NFC contests await Detroit coming out of their rest, with all three potentially having postseason implications down the road. While Detroit is headed into the bye week with all the momentum in the world, these next three games threaten to bring them back down to Earth if they can't fix a few key aspects of their game ahead of Week 9.
Jared Goff, who has been solid to start this season so far with the Lions, told reporters after the teams' win over the Buccaneers in Week 7 that the team left a lot of points on the board and simply didn't capitalize nearly enough on the stellar effort of Detroit's backup secondary.

"We should have blown that game open, really, and we didn't."
Without this foot on the gas energy from Detroit's offense, it's hard to see how the Lions can gain the separation they need in both the NFC North and the NFC overall to get a first week bye in the postseason. The last thing a team as injury-prone as them needs is to have to play an extra Wild Card game on the road to a Super Bowl appearance.
Now, the three teams the Lions are facing after the bye - the Vikings, Commanders, and Eagles - are struggling. Philadelphia just had to re-sign a retired Brandon Graham because of how down bad their pass rush is. Washington is dealing with injury woes plaguing star quarterback Jayden Daniels. And, Minnesota is still figuring things out with their neophyte quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
So, is it possible Detroit comes out of the bye, with key returns, and dominates these three squads? Absolutely. It'd be big for their chances in the NFC in general, and in their quest to win yet another NFC North title. But, without that killer mentality on offense, it's hard to see how Detroit can take full advantage of this slightly easier schedule coming out of their break.
