Lions QB Jared Goff compares speedy WRs Jameson Williams, Brandin Cooks

Arguably the best season of Jared Goff’s NFL career come in 2018 with the Los Angeles Rams when he had a top-flight possession receiver in Robert Woods and a speedy downfield threat in Brandin Cooks.

Now with the Detroit Lions, Goff might be in a similar situation once rookie wideout Jameson Williams takes the field, as the 28-year-old QB said he saw a little bit of Cooks in Williams during his first practice with the team.

“[Jameson is] very, very fast,” Goff told reporters on Wednesday. “Brandin Cooks is probably the fastest guy I’ve played with, and [Williams has] a different type of speed, though. Again, I haven’t seen him play in a real game, but he’s longer, he’s a stride guy, he’s got length, he’s got wingspan. Brandin was just more of a burner, and he’s done that well for a long time, but Jameson, he can extend on guys, he can make catches away from his body — that type of stuff.”

Cooks, of course, clocked a 4.33 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine in 2014. Williams didn’t run at the combine or Alabama’s pro day after tearing his ACL in January, but he did tell reporters had he not injured his knee, he would have broken the combine record for the fastest 40 time.

Williams’ last official 40-yard dash time was clocked at 4.4 seconds.
