Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is seen as the de facto leader of the teams' high-octane offense. Between the passing options of Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, as well as the running back options of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, Goff's job is to be the best manager possible for those weapons.
Of course, that means that these players have some high praise for Goff, who has to be in constant communication with them and be their leader on a contending team. Montgomery and Gibbs recently sat down with The Pivot Podcast hosted by Ryan Clark to discuss Goff's leadership style, and they offered praise for Goff's "dog" mentality in games.
"JG a dog, man. He is everything to this team. Without him, I don't know where we'd be at," said Gibbs on the podcast.
"People don't like to talk about him enough, or he not good enough. That fuel him so much. Not even to prove everybody wrong, but to prove himself right. That's who I want leading the troops. There's a lot of great quarterbacks, JG a dog," added Montgomery about his quarterback.
Goff has been criminally underrated over the last two seasons with the Lions, often with the excuse that he's been able to rely on the talent of his backfield and his receiving corp to land in the postseason for two years in a row now. With the second most passing yards in the NFL last season as well as the 4th most touchdowns, Goff is obviously in the upper echelon of signal callers in the league.
However, there are just so many stars on the Lions' offense that it's hard to single out Goff as the lone cause for the Lions' success with that unit. That could explain why he just continues to lack in as much praise as players like St. Brown or Gibbs receive from media throughout the season.
Goff isn't likely to be atop any way too early MVP predictions for the 2025 season - although he should be - but that isn't going to stop him from performing within the system that helped to revitalize his career post-LA Rams trade. His goal is likely to help lead a second team in his NFL career to the Super Bowl, and this time, to actually win it.
