Lions' Week 1 matchup with Packers just got interesting with latest injury news

The Detroit Lions are squaring off with the Green Bay Packers in just ten days. Sounds fake, doesn't it?

But, it's true. The 2025 NFL season is upon us, and another year of Super Bowl aspirations from this Lions roster is about to take center stage. While the Packers have similar goals, albeit maybe not as lofty, they're aiming to contend with the Lions for NFC North bragging rights by winning the title away from Detroit for the first time in two years.

Week 1 will be a huge test for both squads, but it's already shaping up to be a questionable one for the Packers to open the year thanks to a suddenly concerning injury update for wide receiver Jayden Reed. The third year receiver is apparently dealing with a Jones fracture, per ESPN Wisconsin's Jason Wilde. That's an injury that typically requires surgery...and one that he plans to play on, anyway.

Lions potentially handed another break for Week 1 vs. Packers

A quick glimpse at the Packers depth chart and their wide receiver room will greet you with a lot of red markings. Christian Watson is out for the year with a knee injury, Dontayvion Wicks is dealing with a lingering calf injury, and now Reed is managing this fracture. Granted they have talent elsewhere in the room that's healthy and ready to go - rookie Matthew Golden and Romeo Doubs, specifically.

But, there's got to be concern for the Packers as they keep trying and failing to develop a healthy receiving corp for Jordan Love.

"Jayden Reed's injury is a problematic injury. He intends to play through it, but from what I understand, it's a Jones fracture, which is problematic. It's going to take a lot of taking care of it, and being careful with it," said Wilde on ESPN Milwaukee.

Reed looked stellar in 2024, going for 857 receiving yards and six touchdowns in a full 17 games played with the Packers and Love. He's anticipated to get a greater role this year with Watson down for the count and some uncertainty around Golden with him being a rookie.

This is now the second receiver this week that's suddenly presented an advantage to the Lions and their brutal schedule. Rashee Rice has been suspended for six games this season, meaning he'll miss out on the Lions' game against the Kansas City Chiefs during the regular season. Now, Reed is planning to play through what sounds like a very uncomfortable foot injury.
