Along with moving on from head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot, Arthur Blank also removed Rich McKay from his duties as CEO of the Falcons, replacing him with Greg Beadles, and introduced a new position in the front office: President of Football.
Many have speculated that the new title will soon belong to Matt Ryan, who is set to interview for the job later this week. However, the Falcons are at least going to do their due diligence with several other candidates.
Ian Cunningham is intriguing because he is also interviewing for the Falcons’ vacant GM position. So far, he’s been the only candidate publicly linked to that job, but many more names should surface before long. The Bears assistant GM is one of the most well-regarded young executives in the league, and there’s also a connection to Matt Ryan if he is named President of Football. Ryan Poles, the current GM of the Bears, played with Ryan at Boston College and the two remain close friends.
Josh Williams has been with the 49ers for 14 years and is currently their director of scouting and football operations. Mike Disner has been in the NFL for 19 years, including the last seven with the Lions, where he serves as COO. Brandt Tilis spent 14 years in the Chiefs’ front office and is now in his first season with the Panthers as executive vice president of football operations.
All reports continue to suggest that Matt Ryan is the favorite for the job, and if he accepts the role, he is not expected to continue with CBS as a broadcaster. However, the Falcons appear to be preparing for the possibility that Ryan ultimately decides against making the jump into the executive world.
