Locked On: What is Steelers Plan at Safety?

PHOENIX — Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that his team is not done adding to the safety position, and that free agency and the 2023 NFL Draft are both options in terms of re-stocking the cabinet after the departure of Terrell Edmunds.

But the free agent market continues to winnow, with another big-name signing on Monday and the field of potential options shrinking. The draft calls is also not a deep one in terms of options to replace an in-the-box safety like Edmunds. Players like Brian Branch and Jordan Battle from Alabama, Ji’ayir Brown from Penn State and others could fill the gap, but there aren’t that many of them available.

So what is the team’s plan? Could it include Patrick Peterson playing some safety? Tomlin said that it might. It could also involve drafting a player that is not currently listed as a safety.
