After spending a decade in the NFL, a five-time All-Pro linebacker has decided to hang up his cleats at the age of 33.
On Thursday morning, C.J. Mosley told Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports that he's retiring from the NFL. He's been a free agent ever since the New York Jets released him at the start of the new league year.
Mosley, a former first-round pick from the University of Alabama, started his pro career with the Baltimore Ravens. His success in Baltimore led to him receiving a five-year, $85 million deal from the Jets in March 2019.
Over the course of his NFL career, Mosley racked up 1,083 tackles, 12 sacks, 12 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries and three touchdowns.
Not only was Mosley an exceptional playmaker, he was a leader more than capable of anchoring a defense.
Even when the Jets released Mosley in March, the organization had nothing but great things to say about his character.
"C.J. was the epitome of a class act as a teammate, player and leader for the last six seasons," Jets owner Woody Johnson said. "The passion and commitment he brought each day to the organization inspired his teammates to give their all. We sincerely thank C.J. for his countless sacrifices and dedication, and wish him all the best moving forward."
There might not be a spot waiting for Mosley in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but make no mistake about it, he had a career worthy of a standing ovation.
