With the active roster for the Los Angeles Chargers mostly settled, the front office has been busy filling out the 17-man practice squad for the 2025 NFL Season.

What Is The Practice Squad?

The practice squad allows teams to sign players to continue developing them and provide extra depth for specific position groups.

Teams can sign 17 players, consisting of 10 first or second-year players, 6 veteran players, and 1 IPP (International Pathway Program) Player.

During the regular season, practice squad players are primarily used on the scout team to practice against the starters, simulating what the team may potentially face that week.

Two practice squad players are able to be elevated to the active roster each week, before returning to it after games.

Teams can elevate players 3 times before being required to sign them to the active 53-man roster if they do so a 4th time. If players are often released once they reach that three-time limit, though, at risk of being claimed by the 31 other NFL teams.
