Loss to Dolphins should put potential Aaron Rodgers return to rest for Jets

It would take a Hail Mary for Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers to return from a torn Achilles this season. After Friday's 34-13 loss to the Dolphins, not only should New York never try another Hail Mary again, but it also needs to shut down any chance of a Rodgers comeback.

New York (4-7) is playing its worst football during the most important time of the year for the second consecutive season, quickly fading from playoff contention.

Quarterback Tim Boyle, starting after the Jets had seen enough of Zach Wilson, was 27-of-38 for 179 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the loss, highlighting the team's need for Rodgers.

But with the playoffs an unrealistic goal, Rodgers would only be serving himself by returning this season. Earlier this week, Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported that Rodgers intends on playing in 2023 regardless of New York's spot in the AFC playoff race.

On Tuesday during an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," he said he plans to return to practice before his 40th birthday on Dec. 2.

However, a return won't do anyone any good. Instead, it could make things worse. As bad as the Jets offensive line has been, Rodgers would be a sitting duck by coming back with limited mobility. If he suffered another injury, that would set the team back during the offseason.

As NFL insider Josina Anderson wrote, "Proving a short recovery, is not more important than the team's long-term outlook and financial considerations."

Rodgers has insisted all season that his injury isn't a season-ender, but it's time for him to put his ego aside and punt on a return in 2023.
