A recent report revealed that the San Francisco 49ers "have no plans to trade quarterback Mac Jones this offseason and fully intend to bring him back as Brock Purdy's backup."
History shows that the "have no plans" line doesn't necessarily guarantee anything about Jones' future. During an appearance on the latest edition of the "Monday Mornings with Mitch" podcast, Jones discussed spending the 2025 campaign working with Purdy, head coach Kyle Shanahan and other members of the 49ers.
"I signed a two-year deal here, and I've absolutely loved it," Jones explained, per David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. "I got that joy back that I was looking for. I talked about the PhD in football. I truly believe that I got that this year. Things I didn't — maybe thought I knew — but I didn't know yet, and Kyle helped me find that. So, I'm looking forward to doing it again next year, but as you know, it's a business, and they have to make a business decision, and I have to, too."
Jones has made it known that he feels he proved during the 2025 season that he can be a full-time starter. In total, he went 5-3 across eight starts when Purdy was dealing with a toe issue this past campaign.
That said, the Niners signed Purdy to a five-year, $265M contract extension that included $181M in guarantees and a no-trade clause last offseason. Thus, Jones is on track to begin springtime workouts as a QB2 unless he lands with a different team at some point after the new league year officially opens on March 11.
"I love the 49ers, so if I'm here, I'm going to be happy, and if something happens, we know what I can do," Jones added. "I proved that this year, and when I've had the right situation, I feel like I've proved that. So, I'm excited for it. As you know, it's a waiting game [filled with] unpredictability."
For a piece published on Tuesday morning, ESPN's Ben Solak noted that the Atlanta Falcons, New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals are among the teams that could have a need for a 2026 Week 1 QB1. Whether or not any of those clubs will make an offer for Jones that the 49ers can't refuse shall be seen.
