The Mac Attack was in full swing during Thursday night’s NFC West clash between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams.
Mac Jones made his third start of the season at quarterback for the 49ers as Brock Purdy is still recovering from a toe injury, and he completed 33 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns.
The former Alabama quarterback played so well that people are wondering who the starter should be going forward.
When Jones was asked if he is the starting quarterback, he described what his role is this season and complimented the toughness of Purdy, who tried to return to the field last week but ultimately struggled through his injury.
“They brought me here to play as a backup and that’s my job,” Jones said. “Brock’s the starter of this team. Right now, he’s dealing with something and for him to go out last week and play when you probably know he’s not at full health shows a lot. I’m just trying to get some wins for this team so it helps us down the line.”
Jones was drafted by the New England Patriots in the 2021 draft, but his tenure in New England did not go well as Bill Belichick essentially ruined his development by assigning two former defensive coordinators to be co-offensive coordinators in his last season as the starter.
From there, he moved on to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he had to come in for Trevor Lawrence when he was injured. However, he did not find much success in the Jaguars’ offense, and eventually the team fired head coach Doug Pederson.
Then, he ended up with the 49ers because head coach Kyle Shanahan was a fan of Jones during the 2021 pre-draft process. The 49ers ended up drafting Trey Lance to play quarterback for them, but that did not work out.
Now that Purdy is injured, Shanahan gets to play Jones at quarterback in his system, and this decision has paid off as he’s gone 3-0 as a starter to keep the 49ers on top of the NFC West.
There is no word on who will start next week for the 49ers, but it looks like a healthy Jones is the preferred option, logically as well as from a fan standpoint, since he is 3-0.
