After excelling while filling in for injured Brock Purdy, Mac Jones put the San Francisco 49ers in a challenging position. Should it cash in and trade Jones or keep him under contract one more season?
It turns out, San Francisco wasn’t going to allow the situation to linger into the offseason as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the team fully intends on bringing Jones back as the backup.
Jones has one year left on his current contract for $3.o7 million.
The former Alabama quarter revived his professional career with the 49ers this past season as he started in eight games this season. Within that span, he posted a QBR of 62.9 and threw for 13 touchdowns to just six interceptions. Most importantly San Francisco went 5-3 under Jones’ command.
“Mac made this place better,” general manager John Lynch said according to ESPN. “He was outstanding this season. He picked us up in a huge way and it was a really fun process to watch him come in and the joy that he was playing with. He’s got an infectious attitude that affects everybody on our team. It affected that quarterback room. … Like Kyle said, you always listen, but I know we’re a better football team with Mac Jones on our roster.”
Although competing for the pure starting role may be unlikely next season, Purdy has proven to be injury prone across his tenure in the league. If nothing else it will continue to be a great opportunity for Jones to prove to the rest of the league what he’s capable of when his next opportunity comes around.
And he’s made it clear, that he believes he will.
“I do believe I’m a starter in this league and I’m excited for continuing to get better this offseason and see what happens,” Jones said.
