Alabama Crimson Tide alumnus Mac Jones played a key role on the team's 2020 national championship team.
Jones threw for 4500 passing yards, 41 touchdowns and four interceptions. He finished third in Heisman voting and was an All-American that season. He lost to Alabama teammate and receiver DeVonta Smith.
The Alabama quarterback was taken 15th overall by the New England Patriots in the 2021 NFL Draft. After three seasons with the Patriots, he played for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024.
He was later released by the organization and is competing for a spot in the quarterback room of the San Francisco 49ers.
However, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday that Jones was out of Saturday's game with a knee sprain.
There was a silver lining, however, as Schefter later stated that the team expects Jones to be ready for the season opener.
Jones played in the 49ers' first two preseason games, throwing for a combined 209 passing yards and two interceptions. The organization takes on the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday to close out the NFL preseason.
Alabama is in a different place than it was when Jones played in Tuscaloosa. For starters, Nick Saban has retired, and former Washington Huskies head coach Kalen DeBoer is now in charge.
A former Saban recruit was in the news recently, as former five-star recruit Julian Sayin was named the starting quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Sayin committed to Saban and Alabama, but transferred once the head coach retired.
Back in Tuscaloosa, the Crimson Tide received some troubling news about one of last year's starters. Running back Jam Miller is going to miss time with an upper-body injury. Miller finished second on Alabama in rushing yards last season with 668 behind quarterback Jalen Milroe (726).
The 49ers face the Chargers at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN Unlimited.
