Massive Giants, Dexter Lawrence II update emerges after Joe Schoen comments

While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen insisted that he had some "productive" conversations with Dexter Lawrence II regarding the trade request submitted by the defensive tackle related to Lawrence's desire to receive a pay raise.

It appears somebody wanted outsiders to know those talks aren't going all that well.

Giants, Dexter Lawrence II not close to reaching a deal?

Late Tuesday night, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport (h/t Grant Gordon of the league's website) reported that the Giants and Lawrence "have reached an impasse in their extension talks and a resolution is likely to come before" when the NFL Draft gets underway on the night of April 23.

"New York has engaged with teams regarding a potential trade," Rapoport continued, "and those talks will continue with the arrival of the draft likely marking a point in which the Giants have been able to fully gauge interest in Lawrence and can move forward with a decision."

The Giants signed Lawrence to a four-year, $90M extension in the spring of 2023. As ESPN's Jordan Raanan noted, however, that deal is currently out of guaranteed money.

While it was reported as recently as Monday that "the Giants are not interested in parting ways with Lawrence," it now sounds like there's at least a chance that the 28-year-old could be moved at some point over the next week.

Dexter Lawrence II is linked with at least three teams

Gordon specifically mentioned the Cincinnati Bengals, Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars among potential suitors for Lawrence.

"The team looking to add Lawrence would likely be on the hook for compensation sent to the Giants as well as locking up the dancing DT on an extension," Gordon added.

Back on April 7, NFL insider Connor Hughes of SNY reported that the expected return value for Lawrence at that time was "a late 2026 first-round pick, a 2027 first-round pick, or a second-and fifth-round pick." It's unclear if the supposed "impasse" will result in the Giants lowering their asking price for Lawrence before draft selections start getting made on the fourth Thursday of April.
