Packers fans can now declare that the Micah Parsons chapter has opened in Green Bay . Parsons made his debut on Sunday, and the Lambeau Field faithful roared as he was announced last among the defenders ahead of the showdown with the Detroit Lions.
“It makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Not that I have any — ’cause I go with this bald fade. But it makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck for sure. That might be the loudest I’ve ever heard our crowd.” Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said, via Michael Silver of The Athletic.
Parsons was not at full strength when he lined up against Jared Goff and the Lions, with a back problem leaving him questionable before kickoff. Even so, he still managed to make his presence felt on Green Bay’s defense.
The 26-year-old Parsons slipped past Lions right tackle Penei Sewell in the second quarter and pressured Goff into a throw that Packers defensive back Evan Williams intercepted. In the fourth, he secured his first sack with Green Bay, dragging Goff down outside the pocket for a memorable quarterback stop.
LaFleur reached for a different kind of phrase to describe Parsons’ impact on the field. “He’s an aura farmer,” the coach said, borrowing a term from his teenage sons. Like many Gen Xers using TikTok slang, LaFleur may have missed the mark, since the phrase can sometimes be taken negatively to describe someone seeking attention, which was clearly not his intention.
Here, LaFleur was recalling a sideline exchange with offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich. After one powerful rush from Parsons, Stenavich looked at him and said, “God, he’s got great aura.”
LaFleur and defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley expect to see plenty more of those kinds of plays from the four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher as the Packers push to bring the Vince Lombardi Trophy back home.
NFL Pro noted that Jared Goff released the ball in 2.80 seconds with Micah Parsons on the field, more than half a second quicker than the 3.36 average without him. Green Bay’s defense clamped down, giving up only 246 total yards, stopping Detroit on 10 of 15 third downs, and holding the Lions to just 2.1 yards per rush.
