Signing right guard Mekhi Becton was the biggest move the LA Chargers made this offseason. Becton filled the massive need at right guard for the Chargers and by doing so, became a fan favorite with the fanbase before even playing a snap.
Becton is already challenging his status as a fan favorite well before playing a game with the Chargers. The Super Bowl-winning right guard is making is rounds in Los Angeles and was seen supporting a team that many Chargers fans don't like.
Becton was spotted behind home plate at Wednesday night's Los Angeles Dodgers game against the Athletics. Becton was sporting a custom Dodgers jersey with his name and number on the back. With most of the Chargers fanbase supporting the Padres, this did not sit well.
Becton is just doing what every player does in a professional sports market and supporting a team that shares a city with the Chargers. However, it is interesting to note that for the most part, the Chargers have been connected with the Los Angeles Angels, not the Dodgers.
Two years ago, the Angels called Justin Herbert up to do a photoshoot rocking the team's new City Connect uniforms. Last summer, Jim Harbaugh went down to Angel Stadium to sign autographs and catch a game.
The Angels are a much less controversial team for a Chargers player to support. The mixture of baseball fans among the Chargers fanbase is complex and the Angels have just as big of a share as the Dodgers. Most Chargers fans are Padres fans, with a smaller fraction being an Angels fan or a Dodgers fan.
Supporting the Angels is not controversial as it appeals to that section of the fanbase and doesn't directly upset the Padres fans, who absolutely despise the Dodgers. Supporting the Dodgers may appeal to a small portion of the fanbase, but does not sit well with most in the fanbase.
Of course, no Chargers fan is going to stop rooting for Becton because of the baseball team he supports while he plays in Los Angeles. After all, Becton probably isn't even a Dodgers fan and simply wanted to check out the better LA baseball team.
Becton is crucial in protecting Herbert and his baseball takes won't change how fans feel about him once the whistle blows. However, fans definitely won't be asking about his other sports takes.
