Members of Chiefs comment on Andy Reid retirement whispers

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is among noteworthy members of the Kansas City Chiefs convinced that head coach Andy Reid will stay in the job regardless of the outcome of this Sunday's Super Bowl LVIII matchup versus the San Francisco 49ers.

"Other than spending time with his grandkids, he doesn't do any of that stuff," Mahomes recently revealed about Reid's off-the-field activities, per Adam Teicher of ESPN. "He's all about football and cheeseburgers."

Reid is already a two-time Super Bowl champion head coach who turns 66 years old in March and who is fourth on the all-time list with 283 NFL wins (regular season and playoffs combined) by a head coach. Thus, it's not all that surprising that whispers suggesting that Reid could ride off into the sunset if Kansas City beats San Francisco this Sunday are hovering over the Chiefs. 

"He's in a good place, not just with Pat but with his coaching staff and with the personnel staff," Chiefs general manager Brett Veach insisted about Reid. "This is the setup he's always wanted. I think he has a lot of football coaching ahead of him, and I can see him coaching for the foreseeable future here. I think he's got a good chunk of time left."

Some within the NFL community believe that the Chiefs could target former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick if Reid calls time on his coaching career this winter. Every team that had a head-coaching vacancy this hiring cycle passed on Belichick, and Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt seems confident he won't need to contact any would-be coaching candidates anytime soon. 

"As I see Andy, he remains incredibly energized and excited," Hunt explained. "I think he has as much energy and passion as I've seen in the 10-plus years he's been with us."

As of early Tuesday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Chiefs as two-point underdogs against the 49ers. While things often change quickly in the NFL, it sounds like Reid won't be pursuing a career walk-off victory this Sunday.
