Merrill Reese has called some fun Philadelphia Eagles games over his 46 years in the broadcast booth, and Sunday’s improbable win over the Los Angeles Rams has to be high on the list.
First, the Eagles couldn’t move the football on offense and wound up trailing by 17 points early in the third quarter. The reigning Super Bowl champs then came alive with a furious rally to take a one-point lead with 1:48 remaining.
Philly ultimately survived thanks to a pair of blocked field goals in the fourth quarter — the second of which produced an all-time highlight with 330-pound defensive tackle Jordan Davis sprinting untouched to the end zone for a 61-yard, game-sealing score.
It goes without saying that Reese was every Eagles fan at that moment. His final call with longtime radio partner Mike Quick for 94WIP included a perfect mix of disbelief and jubilation, with the end result leaving most fans with the same feeling — chills.
“They blocked him the last time. … The ball is spotted. The kick is away and it is… blocked! It’s blocked! It’s picked up by the Eagles! Running with it is Davis — 30, 20, 10, 5, touchdown! Game over! Jordan Davis blocked him again! Have you ever seen anything like this?”

Per the Philadelphia Inquirer, Reese was recently inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the recipient of the 2024 Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award. He’s been calling Eagles games since 1978, so compiling a list of his most iconic moments involves some research.
No. 1 has to be the Philly Special, right? Super Bowl LII. Nick Foles out-dueled Tom Brady on a night when Brady passed for a record 505 yards and three touchdowns.
Frankly, both Eagles Super Bowl calls belong at or near the top of the list, but there’s just something about the first that carries more weight.
“And the game is over! The game is over. The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl champions. Eagles fans everywhere, this is for you! Let the celebration begin!” — Merrill Reese, Super Bowl LII
There’s been some epic return touchdowns like Davis’ throughout Eagles history as well. DeSean Jackson’s walk-off punt return against the New York Giants in 2010 was dubbed the Miracle at the New Meadowlands. There's also Week 6 of the 2003 season, when Brian Westbrook’s electrifying fourth-quarter return stunned — who else? — the Giants in East Rutherford.
There were some epic NFC East battles in the 1990s, with the Cowboys especially, that deserve some consideration here as well.
While incredibly fun and picturesque, Davis’ signature play probably falls somewhere in the top 10, but firmly outside the top five. With the Eagles leading Los Angeles by one point, 27-26, the game was over as soon as the ball was deflected; Davis’ return was just the icing on the cake.
