In recent years, the Dolphins have built their identity around speed and explosive plays. Don’t get me wrong—I love watching this team light up the scoreboard and come up with plays that make you sit back and say, “Did they really just do that?” Just look at the Miami Miracle against the Patriots. The Dolphins moved the ball through multiple players and Kenyan Drake took it 52 yards for a touchdown as time expired. Those are the kinds of moments that remind you just how exciting this team can be.

The Dolphins signed Malik Willis as a free agent. The former third-round pick has another opportunity to prove he can be more than the quarterback we’ve seen in flashes during his young NFL career. I think this could be one of the most interesting stories of the entire season.

Willis has the physical tools; there’s no denying that. He’s athletic. He has a strong arm. He can create plays when he breaks out of the pocket.

We’ve also seen that having the physical ability to play quarterback in the NFL and playing consistently are two very different things. That’s where this opportunity becomes so important. Miami isn’t asking Willis to be the player he was when he entered the league. They’re giving him a chance to show what he can become.

If he takes that opportunity? Well, suddenly the Dolphins may have found something very important. A quarterback who could potentially grow alongside this young roster. That’s an exciting possibility.

This is where I’m going to say something that might sound like a cop-out. I don’t know yet. I don’t think anybody honestly does.

Maybe 2026 isn’t the year everything comes together. Maybe it is.

If the Dolphins can take these new pieces and turn them into something cohesive, this season could end up being about much more than wins and losses. It could be the beginning of something new.
