Miami Dolphins Re-Sign Edge Rusher Seth Coleman-Lyles
The Miami Dolphins are bringing back a familiar face to their defensive front, as the team is re-signing edge defender Seth Coleman-Lyles.
According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Coleman-Lyles is returning to Miami after spending more than six months with the organization earlier this year. He had been waived by the Dolphins on August 5 as part of a series of roster moves.
Coleman-Lyles reportedly was scheduled to work out for the New York Jets before deciding to return to Miami.
The move gives head coach Jeff Hafley and the Dolphins another familiar option on the edge as Miami continues to adjust its roster during the preseason.
Coleman-Lyles originally joined the Dolphins on January 21 when he signed a reserve/futures contract. His addition was one of Miami’s first roster moves after Hafley became the team’s head coach.
The 25-year-old spent the offseason program and the beginning of training camp with Miami before being waived on August 5 when the Dolphins claimed tight end Jeremiah Franklin off waivers from the New England Patriots and signed defensive lineman Fatorma Mulbah. Miami also placed defensive lineman Rene Konga on injured reserve as part of those moves.
Now, less than two weeks later, Coleman-Lyles is back.
His familiarity with Miami’s defensive system could be valuable this late in training camp. Rather than bringing in a completely new player who would have to learn the terminology and responsibilities of Hafley’s defense from scratch, the Dolphins are adding someone who has already spent the entire offseason learning the scheme.
Per source, Dolphins are bringing back DE/LB Seth Coleman Lyles, a former Illinois standout who spent 6 plus months with team this year before being waived Aug. 5. Dolphins added 2 other front 7 defenders in past 36 hours.

Coleman-Lyles played six seasons at Illinois from 2019 through 2024, appearing in 56 games with 42 starts.
During his college career, he recorded 183 tackles, 27.5 tackles for loss, 15.5 sacks, 15 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
His production and experience earned him an opportunity with the Seattle Seahawks after he went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Coleman-Lyles spent the 2025 offseason and training camp with Seattle before being waived during final roster cuts. He later landed on the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad in October but was released after a brief stint with the organization. Miami then signed him to a futures deal in January.
The decision to bring Coleman-Lyles back continues a recent run of moves by Miami involving its defensive front seven.
The Dolphins have been active throughout training camp trying to improve their depth and create competition at several spots on defense. Coleman-Lyles isn’t necessarily being brought back with expectations of immediately becoming a major contributor, but he gives Miami another player capable of competing for a role on the edge.
At this stage of the preseason, familiarity matters.
Coleman-Lyles already knows Hafley’s defense, has practiced with many of his Dolphins teammates and should be able to get back onto the field without the extended adjustment period that normally accompanies a late-training-camp signing.
He’ll now get another opportunity to show the Dolphins coaching staff that he deserves to stick around when Miami trims its roster to 53 players.
For Coleman-Lyles, it’s a second chance with the Dolphins — and one that came before he could potentially land with an AFC East rival.
