Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is optimistic about returning next week after suffering a rib injury in Sunday’s 30-23 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens. However, he also made clear that his health will come first.

Penix suffered the injury late in regulation after being sacked by Ravens linebacker Tavius Robinson. He briefly returned to the game but could not continue in overtime as the discomfort worsened.

Speaking to reporters after the loss, Penix expressed confidence in his recovery while acknowledging that further evaluation is necessary.

“I’m gonna do everything I can in the training room, you know, make sure I get back to where I wanna be,” Penix said. “But I, obviously, you know, my health is very, very serious. I take that very serious, so, you know, it’s… that’s always gonna come first.”

The quarterback also explained why he believes he can return for Atlanta’s next game.

“Knowing me, I’m gonna be ready [to go] next week ’cause I’ve sat out enough in my career,” Penix told reporters. “But I will work myself up to make sure I’m back out there on that field.”

Penix was asked whether he had experienced a similar issue before. He confirmed that he dealt with rib problems during his college career, although he stressed that the experience was a long time ago.

When asked whether the current injury was similar, Penix said he did not know because he had not undergone imaging yet.

Before leaving Sunday’s game, Penix completed 19 of 32 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown. He did not throw an interception.

Tua Tagovailoa replaced him in overtime, but his interception to Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton ended Atlanta’s final possession.

The Falcons now face questions about Penix’s availability for their next matchup against the Chicago Bears. His confidence is encouraging, but the results of further medical evaluation will be important in determining whether he can return.

For now, Penix’s message is clear: he intends to work toward playing next week, but he will not put his health ahead of his recovery.
