Mike Florio suggests Eagles got makeup call after non-facemask vs. Commanders

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio has suggested officials gave the Philadelphia Eagles a makeup call versus the Washington Commanders on Monday night.

As described by Jeremy Layton of the New York Post, the play in question occurred in the fourth quarter of Monday's game when Washington held a 23-21 lead. Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert lost control of the football as his facemask was clearly grabbed by Commanders linebacker Jamin Davis:

No flag for a facemask penalty was thrown, and Davis returned the fumble for what was initially called a Washington touchdown before referees ruled him down by contact from Goedert at the Philadelphia 34-yard line following a review. However, Florio thinks video replays show that officials got multiple aspects of the play wrong.

"But the video suggests that, by the time Davis had the ball, he wasn’t being touched by Goedert," Florio wrote. "More importantly, it wasn’t 'clear and obvious' that the ruling on the field was incorrect.

"It’s hard not to think that the decision to take the touchdown off the board was influenced, consciously or not, by the fact that a facemask foul should have wiped out everything, including the fumble. Regardless, the rules should allow a quick and easy fix to such a clear and obvious mistake."

Overall, Florio was campaigning for the NFL to alter the current rule and make facemask fouls reviewable via video replay. A minimum of 24 owners would have to approve of such a change during the upcoming offseason.

"We didn’t see a face mask on the field," referee Alex Kemp admitted while speaking with reporters after the game. "As far as the review, we were reviewing whether he was down by contact or whether it was a fumble and then whether the Washington player who recovered the ball was also down by contact."

As for the contest's outcome, the Commanders notched a 32-21 win to give the Eagles their first loss of the season. 5-5 Washington next plays at the 1-7-1 Houston Texans this coming Sunday, while 8-1 Philadelphia will be at the 4-5-1 Indianapolis Colts that same afternoon.
