Mike Tomlin Drops Hint on Steelers’ Big Plans for T.J. Watt

Pittsburgh Steelers superstar pass rusher T.J. Watt has been absent from mandatory minicamp while he’s amid contract negotiations.

Unlike 2021, when he was also entering the final season of his deal, Watt hasn’t been with the team at all. Four years ago, he was present during minicamp and training camp, but he didn't participate in any drills during negotiations, sending a message to the Steelers.

It ultimately worked for Watt as he signed a four-year, $112 million contract extension just before that season began.

Now, it’s a complete hold out, with Watt hoping to send a message to the organization about getting another massive deal done. Heading into the 2025 season, he’s set to have the seventh largest salary among pass rushers, but the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year wants more.

Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns landed a new contract where he will earn $40 million in 2025, although he’s younger, it’s logical to believe Watt probably wants something at least close to that number.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was asked earlier today about the future of his elite defender and he remains optimistic.

“I'm not going to get into speculation there,” Tomlin said. “I'm optimistic we're going to get things done because we got two sides that want to get things done. When that's going to occur I do not know.”

After Garret, the next three highest paid pass rushers are Danielle Hunter ($35.6 million), Maxx Crosby ($35.5 million), and Nick Bosa ($34 million).

Watt, 30, is slated to make $28 million this season, so it’s reasonable for him to believe he should earn more. As this saga continues, it will be fascinating to see if the two sides reach an agreement before the season begins.
